Spring Update

May 14, 2012
We are rapidly approaching another cherry season, and all of us at Jealous Fruits are busy preparing for our upcoming harvest. Blossom has started at our valley farms and bloom should begin at our high elevation Cholla Hill site within five to seven days. Once blossom is complete we can better advise crop projections and anticipated start dates. Early indications are that we have a very nice crop load with a slight increase in volume over the 2011 season.

Our field crews have been working hard this spring planting 70 acres comprised predominantly of Regina and Sentennial, with lesser quantities of Van and Burgundy Pearl.

The Regina variety is a fabulously firm, great keeping cherry and is rapidly gaining popularity with our customers. Jealous Fruits has the largest Regina acreage in BC.  Average availability dates on the Regina will be in the August 15th to 20th period.

Sentennial is our latest variety with average harvest dates in late August and early September. The cherry is broad shouldered like a Sweetheart, with an extremely firm, crunchy texture. Sentennial has similar flavour attributes to Staccato and Sweetheart with sizes peaking on 9.5 - 10.

Burgundy Pearl is the newest addition to our cherry family and is a large early season dark red cherry with above average firmness and superior quality.
Burgundy Pearl ripens ahead of Satin. This cherry has excellent flavor, is firm and crunchy and has a very low cracking incidence. Size of Burgundy Pearl peaks on 9 row.

Van is a very broad shouldered cherry with fat green stems. Van is one of the parents or grandparents in almost all varieties produced at Jealous Fruits and still has a strong niche following. The crunchy texture of Sweetheart and Staccato is reminiscent of a well grown Van. Estimated peak sizing is 9 and 9.5 row with some 8.5 as well. Availability of this classic cherry is very limited. Estimated harvest date is July 14th to 17th.

As part of our ongoing variety development program, we are also planting a small number of test trees this spring, including several numbered cultivars from the Summerland breeding program.

Crop Update

June 23, 2011
Blossom season was later this year as a result of a long, cool, winter. As a result we are approximately seven to ten days behind our normal harvest dates.

We experienced enough warm weather during blossom to make for a good crop set and the cherries are now at the green fruit stage.
